Discover More About the Treatment Value of Moxibustion with Our Team in San Francisco
In undergoing treatment for your health challenges, it’s important to learn more about the many alternatives that exist across the marketplace. Our team at Anchor Acupuncture & Wellness have extensive experience in the natural health industry, and in our latest post, we’ll explain more on the process of moxibustion and its benefits for the treatment of many conditions, for our San Francisco patients.
What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion involves the burning of a charcoaled form of a number of herbs – most famously, mugwort or Artemesia Vulgaris. Mugwort is a fragrant herb, and when burned, creates a deep and penetrating heat in the body. There are two types of moxibustion: direct and indirect. During direct moxibustion treatment, a small cone-shaped amount of moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture point and then burned. When it is warm enough, the practitioner scoops it off, and then places another fresh cone. For indirect moxibustion treatment, the practitioner lights one end of a moxa stick and then holds it close to the area being treated until the area gets warm. Most patients find moxa treatments deeply relaxing.
An Ancient Chinese Treatment
The use of moxibustion for the treatment of physical conditions has been taking place for centuries. It was used by the Chinese in ancient times in treating fevers and has been shown to be effective in helping manage colds and coughs in modern society. But the benefits of moxibustion extend further. Moxibustion is a simple and effective treatment for women seeking to ease painful periods, improve their fertility, as well as conditions experienced in pregnancy in San Francisco. We use moxa to treat PUPPPs rash in pregnancy, as well as for breech presentations in the third trimester.
The Benefits in Pregnancy
One of the many clear benefits of moxibustion is that it has been shown to turn breech babies into babies normally positioned in the womb. A study highlighted in the Journal of the American Medical Association highlighted that 75% of women that had breech presentations prior to childbirth had fetuses that rotated to the normal position after a moxibustion treatment.
