Infertility Acupuncture – Can Acupuncture Help with Male Infertility?
Men with some form of infertility often find it difficult to come to terms with their condition, and may grapple with self-esteem and confidence issues. Distress caused by infertility can negatively impact a man’s professional and personal relationships slowly tearing every part of his life away.
Because of unhealthy lifestyles, male infertility is more common today than ever. A study estimates that infertility affects around 7 percent of all men. Thanks to advancements in medical science, infertile men have several infertility treatment options today. These treatment options, however, are expensive, can have side effects, and in many cases fail to produce adequate results.
Many experts believe that acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice that involves inserting needles into specific points of a person’s body to restore the natural flow of energy, holds promise for men with poor sperm quality or other infertility issues.
A study conducted to find whether acupuncture can treat infertility suggests that it can be used to increase sperm quantity as well as improve quality. The study involved 28 men suffering from infertility. The respondents were given acupuncture treatments twice a week for five weeks.
Acupuncture needles were inserted to a depth of 15-25 millimeters, depending on the area of the body that was treated. Needles were first manipulated for 10 minutes and then left stationery for 25 minutes before being removed. Researchers collected semen samples from the respondents a day before the treatment started and after the treatment.
Researches reported that based upon the acupuncture treatments, there were significant positive results for the men. These results included improved sperm motility, a rise in the percentage of healthy semen and that the actual number of healthy sperm increased from 40,000 to 200,000.
Proponents of acupuncture believe that the ancient Chinese practice treats male infertility by helping reduce stress and restore the hormonal balance in the body. Acupuncture expels toxins from the body. An acupuncturist inserts needles into specific points in their patient’s body. This releases chemicals that restore the natural flow of energy in the body promoting the healthy functioning of the reproductive system.
